Troye is a city in France on the Seine river about 150 km (93 mi) southeast of Paris.

In origin, Troyes was the city of the Gallic tribe of the Tricaesses and in Roman times was known as Tricassium or Tricassae, forms which eventually evolved into Troyes. It was not a very important place in Roman times. But it did have a bishop from an early period, the first of these bishops being St. Amateur from about 340.

St. Lupus who supposedly accompanied St. Germanus on his first journey to Britain was the 7th bishop of that city.

The city Troyes is important to Arthuriana only in providing the surname for the Chrétien de Troyes who is the earliest writer known of French Arthurian romances and usually thought to be one of the best.
